Enter and work in a confined space safely: permits, atmospheric testing, standby person duties and emergency egress.
A confined space is an enclosed or partly enclosed area not designed for continuous occupancy, with restricted entry and the risk of a hazardous atmosphere. Tanks, pits and silos are typical examples.
No entry without a valid permit. All energy sources and incoming services must be isolated and verified before anyone enters.
Test for oxygen, flammable gas and toxic gas before entry and monitor continuously. Never enter on the basis of a single test alone.
A trained standby person stays outside, maintains communication, controls entry and initiates rescue. They never enter to attempt a rescue themselves.
